Grackle

3.5"X2.5" Acrylic on paper ACEO

Still trolling through my Puerto Rico pictures. There is a restaurant in Boqueron, called "Paddys" or something like that. Anyway it has an Irish theme, hence the green tablecloths, I guess. There are shamrocks and leprechauns everywhere but the patio sits out over the water with a view of the pier, sailboats and the tropical bay, and it serves the best mojitos.

Both times I have been there the grackles seemed to rule the roost. They sit on the tables and clean up the scraps, not very hygienic I suppose, but quite entertaining.

The Birds

7"X5" Oil on board As the lakers pass through the canal they are followed by a flock of hungry gulls. The trees are at that point where they look just as if they have had a dry brush of yellow green dragged across them, only a few more days and they will be in full leaf. I switched back to oils for this one. No particular reason really, just wanted a change. It would probably have been easier with acrylics as there was no blending required to speak of, and quite a lot of light over dark and dark over light. It might be a good idea to use a little more logic in my decision making

Thrasher

5.5"X3.5" pencil in moleskine Every day the "Yellow-eyed-fruit-demander" comes and perches on the balcony railing expecting to be fed. Papaya seems to be his favourite but he is also very fond of bananas and quite partial to avocado. I expect he likes mango too, but they aren't in season until the summer. If his habit isn't catered to he will fly right into the kitchen and squawk at whoever is around. He has also been known to help himself to whatever has inadvertently been left out on the counter or in the hanging baskets. These baskets are of course designed to be rodent and ant proof, but birds weren't taken into account. This sketch was fast and not completely accurate, I took lots of pictures of him and his mate so I will try to paint him sometime soon. I think he is a Caribbean Thrasher, a close relative of catbirds and mockingbirds and sharing many of their characteristics. They are omnivorous and I would sometimes see him on the tree outside my window with bug or small lizard in his mouth.

Seagull

7"X5" Acrylic on board

Herring Gulls are ubiquitous. This one is quite young, he still has some of his juvenile spots in evidence on his neck and head.

I grew up by the sea and got used to seeing them everywhere, they are sea-gulls after all. The Herring Gulls were only one of several species one would see on Worthing beach. There were Black-headed Gulls and Great and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, as well as terns, divers, sandpipers and plovers. It was only when I found myself in the centre of this vast continent that I realized just how far the Herring Gulls disperse. Anywhere around the Great Lakes they are almost as common as they are by the ocean. I am not sure how far away from the Lakes they can be found. I don't think I have ever seen any in the desert, but I am willing to be corrected.

Bird’s Nest

6"X4" Watercolour & pen on paper

I had ambition to do lots of painting while away but really didn't have much opportunity. I did get a few photos which I will try to work up later but mostly everything is very lush and beautiful but actually rather monochromatic.

In the trellis over the entranceway of the house where I stayed I looked up and saw this little dove patiently sitting on her nest. I stood there and painted her until the rain drove me inside.

Chicadee

5″X7″ Oil on board

As I have mentioned before I am slowly repainting the exterior of my very old clapboard house. This entails a great deal of scraping and preparing. I finally worked my way around to the west wall this year but while in the process of scraping I came the the sorry conclusion that there isn’t a board worth saving. We decided that we would re-side that section and this process was supposed to start next week. Unfortunately today we became aware of a slight problem. The ancient nesting box fastened to that side of the house, which was there when we moved in and has been empty for the four years since, seems to be occupied!

Starlings in the Snow

8″X5″ Pen on paper

Sitting up in the donors’ lounge again at lunch time, I watched these starlings as they flocked to the narrow strip of bare ground along the edge of the building. I don’t know what they were finding to eat there but there were hundreds of them. Of course they weren’t still for a second, so they didn’t exactly pose for me, but I tried to capture their busy flurry as they came in and out of my view.

Brown Bird ACEO

3.5″X2.5″ Acrylic on paper

Another Christmas ornament. A bird of indeterminate breed.

Now I am on the homeward stretch, having been posting here for eleven months, I am doing a lot of thinking about what I will do next year. I want to continue painting and posting but whether I will continue to post every day is still to be decided. I am really enjoying playing with many different styles and media but the pressure (self-imposed) to post something every day has been stressful to say the least and has often resulted in my putting something up that was pretty second (or third, or fourth) rate. I am thinking that I will probably post at least three times a week, and sometimes I will post work-in-progress. This will give me the opportunity to paint some larger pieces, something that I have been unable to find the time for over the past year. I will keep you posted (groan).
