Frankie

5"X7" Acrylic on board

I don't often take on commissions, quite honestly I find them terrifying, especially animal and children portraits. I made an exception for this one as at least the subject was known to me.

I didn't really have any very good photos so I had to use a composite of several, mostly my own but some taken by someone else.

Every morning at around 5:30 Frankie likes to go for a walk on Sandy Beach in Puntas. This is a very famous surfing beach, but there aren't too many surfers this early in the morning.

Maybelline 2

7"X5" Acrylic on board Here she is again, in her favourite chair. Lovely afternoon light coming through the west window, no glass in the windows, just storm shutters. I haven't painted as much as I had intended, other stuff getting in the way. The beautiful weather has inspired me to do Spring projects and gardening.

Dogs

7"X5.5" Pencil in Moleskine Dogs seem to play a major role in daily life in Puerto Rico. Certainly in my family's life anyway. These two are Trigger, a Queensland Blue Heeler and Maybelline, a Sato. Trigger is a very energetic, alpha type dog and Maybelline is just the opposite, very laid-back. They both like to walk on the beach though, and Trigger, being a member of one of the most intelligent breeds, seems to have no trouble in telling the time. 6:30 am and 5:00 pm are walk times, and don't forget the b.a.l.l. Apologies for the poor quality of this image. My moleskine got slightly wet at one point and the ink ran on some pages and bled into others.

Friends

12"X12" Oil on canvas I delivered this commission a few days ago but forgot to take a final photo before I let it go. I went over tonight and took a picture, not a very good reproduction because I had to adjust for the tungsten light. They say that they like it but it was one of the hardest things I have ever done. I am not keen on commissions anyway, I tend to agonize too much. This one was especially hard because I had no good reference photos, just a bunch of snapshots, none of them showing the animals together. These are also the only "children" of a childless couple, so the pressure was really on. I already see lots of things I shold have done differently, but it is done now, thank heavens! Waiting for the Muskrat

4″X3″ Marker on paper

Star is part pitbull part something else. She was the runt of the litter and was hand-raised. She has intact ears and tail and, as my kids said, she’s just like a normal dog except with twice as much muscle. She is fortunate to live on six lightly wooded acres with lots of entertainment for an energetic two-year-old. I have never really known a pitbull before, Star is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. She spends hours digging under the shooting hut which sits on the bank of the creek, it is expected to cave in any day. One day she might actually catch it, muskrat, chipmunk, frog, whatever it is that lives down there.
