Fall Colour 8

5"X7" Acrylic on board

Well we are nearly done with Fall. The reference photo was taken a couple of weeks ago but there are still leaves on some of the trees.

There is a big maple on the corner by our house that still has about 95% of its leaves, some of them are still green. It is always one of the last to drop and one reason why we end up doing much of our raking in the Spring. Last year the weather got really crummy before we could get any raking done. At least the boys have filled 25 bags already this year, we will probably fill as many again, one of the disadvantages of living on one of the leafiest corners in Canada.

Against the Day

9"X6" Mixed media

Not much of an offering but at least I tried.

I went for a short walk at lunchtime and sat for a few minutes to do this quick sketch. I wasn't helped by the fact that I was drawing "contre jour". It was also a bit chilly and I didn't have my fingerless mitts with me. I did find a great place to sit however, back-to-front on the soccer bleachers. This provided a ready-made table.

I used watercolour pencils, "Graphitint" pencils and three different pens for this. As well as the fountain pen which I use quite a lot, I also used a Staedtler pigment liner and my latest toy, a Pentel pocket brush.

Fall Maple

For various reasons we didn't end up going up north, so I painted storm-windows instead. I used a photo from a previous visit to paint this image.

When those of us who live in Niagara, or Toronto talk about going "up north", we really mean northern Southern Ontario. Northern Ontario is something else again.

Achray campground is actually only around lat 46, south of all of North Dakota, Seattle and much of Maine; the South Coast of England starts at around lat 50. It is pretty remote though and the weather is quite different. Fall will already be considerably more advanced there and the temperatures are already below freezing at night.

Fall Again

Queen Street is the main street of Niagara-on-the-Lake but when it crosses King Street it becomes Picton Street. Then at the Shaw Festival it becomes Queens Parade and at John Street it becomes the Niagara Parkway and continues as such all the way down to Fort Erie. This is pretty confusing for the tourists.

This little bit is Queens Parade and I drive along it almost every day. It is really very beautiful but I tend to take it for granted much of the time. The trees are almost all oaks and maples. There are a few chestnuts, hickories, walnuts, crab-apples and sumacs. This is from last year's photo and I think it was probably a few days later, we aren't quite this far along yet
