I had to work this morning, a special backstage tour for Members. Apart from having to be at work at 8:00 am on a Saturday, it really wasn't too much of a hardship. Meet and greet and then sit and listen to Jackie and Judy talk about the process of planning a season of great theatre. The Members are already fans and predisposed to have a great time.

The bonus for me is that this sort of thing is a great opportunity for candid sketching: people are sitting still for a long time and their attention is engaged elsewhere so they tend not to notice me.
I went to a conference yesterday. I had to leave home at 5:30 in the morning in order to be in Toronto for 8:00. The conference lasted until 5:30, I wasn't home until 7:30. I am not even sure why I was there as it was for some software I barely use.
Oh well, the food was quite good. This chap seemed to find it much more compelling than I did.
Jovanni Sy is playwright in residence at the Shaw Festival this year. The likeness is not good (sorry Jovanni but you wouldn't stay still). He has been working on a performance piece scheduled for production next month (June 29 to July 24) at the Miele Demonstration Kitchen in Toronto's St. Lawrence Market, presented by Cahoots Theatre Company. Today we were treated to a reading of the play.
In the full version he will "cook a traditional Filipino fish entree in real time while humorously deconstructing the historical, political, and ethical aspects of the dish". We had to imagine the kitchen and the delicious aromas as well as the video which provides instructional and humourous counterpoint to the text. It was all great fun though and one of the many perqs of working in the theatre.
Well I am back from my travels and ready to start posting again. I did some sketching in Puerto Rico and took hundreds of photographs, both with my Canon EOS and with my new toy. I bought a very cheap ($100) mini-camcorder before I left. It has 5 Megapixels, an 8 Gigabyte SD card and a lithium-ion battery which can be recharged with a usb cable. The lens is, needless to say, not very good and there is no optical zoom, only digital. It takes both videos and stills, I had enormous fun with it and took video clips with it like they were snapshots. I still have to find a way to edit them into something manageable, but I have hours of reference material and will start working on it soon.
I will post some of my sketches first, more-or-less in order, and then some paintings as I work on them. This first drawing was just one of my fellow travellers at the airport.
