Annual Peach Challenge

7"X5" Oil on board

Every year I seem to need to torture myself by trying to paint peaches. Maybe if I painted them every day for a week or two, like Julian Merrow-Smith, I would eventually get it right. As it is, I fuss and worry at it for an hour or two and finally give up and call it done. The one in the background gave me the most trouble, for some reason I couldn't seem to maintain the volume.

Anyway, as usual I spent most of the day painting the house. It was the porch floors this weekend. I really am almost done. Maybe I will get some gardening done tomorrow, thank goodness for civic holidays. one of these weekends maybe I will actually take a day off.

Backlit Mutsus

7"X5" Oil on board I should know better than to start a natural light painting at 4:30 pm on All-Saints Day (right after the clocks have gone back). The light had gone long before I finished.

I am a big apple fan and Mutsus are among my favourites. J. went out and bought three bushels today. They should last for a while if we can just find somewhere cool enough to keep them.

Yellow Plums

6"X4" Oil on board

I feel like I have painted this before, certainly others much like it. A bit of a cop-out today, I am working on a commission so I wanted to do something quick and simple for my daily painting. I don't really do commissions, in fact they terrify me, so I am suffering some angst over it.

Early Apricots

7"X5" Oil on panel

These are painted a little larger than life size, they are very small and not quite ripe. I do love soft fruit season, soon it will be peaches which are probably my favourite. This hasn't been a good year for the fruit growers though, too much rain.

They are in another Chinese bowl, a modern one this time, and I thought that it was time that I tried to tackle the dreaded ellipse again. I can always see the problems after I photograph and upload it. I suppose it would be easier if I wasn't trying to finish it in one sitting. There are some corrections that are just easier to make when the paint is dry. Never mind, it isn't too bad I think.

Strawberries

6″X6″ Oil on panel

I enjoyed painting the eggs last week so I thought I would try the same composition again (more or less). I have to paint strawberries at least once a year. The last couple of times I have had any in the house they have been eaten so fast I haven’t had time to paint them. These are already sliced with sugar and are waiting in the fridge to have for dessert with some vanilla yoghurt.

Lemon & Mango

6″X6″ Oil on panel

I think that this is my 500th post. It is a little difficult to figure out, because I have missed a few days and my first post on Blogger was actually a composite of several days that I had posted on my other blog before I decided to separate them. I can’t go by the number of pictures either because I have occasionally posted more than one picture per post.

I had an urge to do something uncomplicated today. There is a reason why fruit and vegetables are such popular subjects for daily painters, they are probably the least complicated things to paint. That is not to say that everyone paints them well, but the combination of simplicity and popularity (almost all the daily paintings I have sold have been fruit or vegetables) is very hard to resist.
