Geraniums on the Patio

7"X5" Acrylic on board

It has been a busy few weeks, with a daughter getting married and two boys off to first year university. I haven't been very productive.

I have always been very fond of geraniums, especially in pots. I keep them in the basement over the winter, they only need to be watered about once a month and in the spring they have a head start.

These ones are bravely withstanding my tomato plants attempts to take over the world. I am afraid I rather let them get away from me (the tomatoes that is), but they are at last producing fruit and I can't bring myself to discourage them now.

Geranium

Another old one.

I have always liked geraniums, more properly called pelargoniums, in pots. For some reason I don’t much like them as bedding plants. In a basic terra cotta flower pot they have a simple elegance, in beds with african marigolds and petunias they are just boring.

While we are on the subject, I wonder why it is so hard to find English marigolds (calendula) here? I can find seeds if I look hard enough but I have never seen them sold as bedding plants. They seem to grow well here and are a nice way to add some mid-season colour to the beds.

Red Pelargonium

One last go with the acrylics and then I think I will put them away for a while. They don’t seem to suit my working style very well. Even though this was a quick study, the paint dried on my palette before I finished using it. Perhaps I should change my style.

This brave geranium has been sitting in my window all winter. It has just started flowering and clashes magnificently with the pink orchid. Anything to take my mind off the fact that it SNOWED AGAIN LAST NIGHT!
