Gruber/Maklar Duo

7"X5.5" Pencil in Moleskine I haven't been painting much but I do still sketch pretty regularly. It isn't quite as easy to use the scanner with my present setup so I have been rather remiss about posting these drawings. On Friday we hosted another remarkable guitar duo, from Bavaria this time. Chris Gruber and Peter Maklar are wonderful musicians and charming, funny and considerate guests, Their concert at St. Barnabas was one of my favourites so far, just beautiful music.

Wine & Cheese

I haven't posted for a couple of days but I do have a good excuse. On Monday night we hosted a house concert with brilliant guitarist Laura Young who was visiting from Barcelona where she lives. I managed to sketch a few pictures as I was sitting at the back, but I really had to be quiet as you could hear a pin drop in that setting. We had about 25 people, so it was intimate but very well received and I think a great success. As you can imagine we weren't up to cooking much beforehand (I would have had to clean the kitchen again), so we mostly feasted on the wine and cheese we had provided for the post show reception.

Last night I went to a silent auction and performance in aid of Carousel Players, a local professional theatre company who specialize in taking theatre to schools all over the region and occasionally tour further afield. It was great fun, they did a reading of Danny, King of the Basement by David Craig which I hadn't seen before and enjoyed enormously. It was funny and touching and extremely well presented. I didn't really have time to eat before I went so I filled up on, guess what? Wine & cheese. The wine was courtesy of local winery Marynissen and very good.

Laura played at St Barnabas last night in the Guitar Niagara series. The program was beautiful and her playing astonishing. The only thing more remarkable than her playing is her hair of which there is a prodigious amount. This time the lights in the church stayed up a little higher which made it a bit easier to draw, but she is an animated player, never still for a moment. There was a temptation to produce a picassoesque composition, with different parts drawn from different angles. There is definitely something strange about her left arm.

Laura is a Toronto born musician who currently lives in Barcelona and teaches at Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya.

J. did his annual faculty concert at Brock U. today. I actually managed to get there for the first time in about ten years. I wimped out on the hands, the rest was pretty easy, a sitting target in fact.

For any locals out there, there will be a wonderful concert at St Barnabas Anglican Church on Queenston Street, St. Catharines, next Tuesday (Feb 10) at 7:30. The Eden Stell Duo from England are one of the best guitar ensembles in the world. Go here for more information.
