Snow Day

5"X7" Oil on card

Well the "blizzard" wasn't nearly as bad around here as forecast, but I decided that I didn't want to risk the rural roads to work anyway. I did some work at home and spent about an hour shovelling. I got off lightly because my sainted neighbour wanted to try out her new snow-blower and my sidewalk (150') provided ample practice! It is still snowing so I will have to get out there again shortly.

These orchids aren't quite in bloom yet, any day now. I did something I have never done before and painted on plain card, I am not sure of the archival quality so I probably won't offer this one for sale. It just started out as a sketch but I rather liked the composition.

Montreal Interior

7"X5" Oil on board I spent a few days in Montreal after Christmas, in a lovely house on the edge of Westmount. I always find it very inspiring because, as well as being very beautiful in its own right, with lots of wonderful light, it is also full of great 20th century Canadian art. This is a further experiment in my attempt to simplify my painting and develop value studies.

Hall

6″X8″ Oil on board

This was definitely one of those “what was I thinking?” paintings. I chose the subject because I thought it would be a challenge, but it was bit more of a challenge than I really wanted. I was picking at it for most of the day, on and off, and wiped off the entire staircase and started again at one point. I have painted this staircase from a different angle before. It was a lot easier last time.

I did manage to achieve one or two other things today, apart from the usual 6 loads of laundry and two shopping expeditions. I also painted the peak of the west wall of the house. I should be able to reach the rest from the 16′ ladder which will be a relief. I can’t move the big one on my own and have to get the boys to help every time I need to shift it.

Laundry

9″X8″Gouache on cover-stock

Sitting down on my bed to fold a mountain of laundry the other day I was sidetracked by my new gouache paints. I only have primaries so it is a bit of a challenge getting the colours right but I am loving the fact that I can use white for the highlights. I did this with virtually no preliminary drawing, it was mostly just an exercise in painting fabric, the pillows at the end of the bed and the various things hanging on the back of the closet door provided lots to study.

For the uninitiated, gouache is a water-based medium but is heavier and more opaque than watercolour. It has larger particles and there is also an additional “opacifier”, usually chalk, the ratio of pigment to water is also much higher. In traditional transparent watercolur technique whites and lights are always created by leaving areas unpainted or thinly painted and allowing the white of the paper to show through. Gouache is used more like oils or acrylics and highlights can be added later with white or light coloured paint sometimes called “body colour”.

The Lobby

7″X5″ Pen on paper

Actually this is not the main lobby of the theatre but the entrance to the Annex, drawn from the donors’ lounge. Not being an architectural draughtsman I found this to be quite a challenge, it certainly was a lesson in perspective. It would actually make quite a good subject for a painting, the light is very interesting and the reflections on the polished brick floor add to the layers of perspective.

I am running out of inspiration, I may have to return to fruit and vegetables for a while, anything but more snowscapes.

Pointsettia

5″X7″ Oil on board

There are many little corners of this house that I would like to paint, places where the light is especially nice or bits of shabby old furniture that I am particularly fond of. I was a fan of “shabby chic” long before I knew it had a name and this house is the ultimate showcase for the style. This is rather an odd little composition, it is hard to find a good spot to paint that isn’t a thoroughfare. I do like painting interiors though and need the practice. For some very fine interiors you should visit Sheila Vaughan’s blog.

I am very chuffed to have been featured on Shed Style. Author Debra Prinzing has recently published Stylish Sheds and Elegant Hideaways, to great reviews, check it out. This is the second shed themed blog to have mentioned my painting (the other was Shedworking a couple of weeks ago). I do have rather a thing for sheds, both the elegant and the dilapidated and one day would love to become a “shedworker” too.
